Our Green Commitment

Our green commitment

We’re always working to become more sustainable.

We want the best for the environment. To us that means constantly challenging ourselves to find ways in which we can use our scale and our people, to influence and drive change. From minimising how much packaging we use to investing in energy efficiency – we want to help protect our planet for communities today and in the future.

Putting a lid on straws

We made a landmark move in December 2021 towards reducing single-use plastics by introducing strawless lids for all cold cup beverages. This green measure joins a whole host of other sustainability initiatives that we’ve put in place, watch the video below to learn more!

Our Green Restaurants

2011 marked the year in which we launched our very first green restaurant in Singapore at Jurong Central Park, which received the inaugural Green Mark Platinum Award for Restaurants from the Building Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA). Twenty-seven McDonald’s restaurants have since been awarded the Green Mark Award, of which 3 restaurants have been awarded the Green Mark Platinum Award and 5 restaurants the Green Mark GoldPLUS Award.

Packaging

Our Packaging

We realised that little changes to our packaging can make a big difference.

These are some of the changes that we’ve made to our packaging over the years:

  • Introduced the condiments bar to reduce foil packaging used for individual sauce sachets. In 2014, savings made on sauce packaging translated to savings of 291,200 square metres of foil (equivalent of 40 football fields).
  • Usage of recycled paper in napkins.
  • Recognised at the 3R Packaging 2010 Awards for redesigning the McFlurry spoon to reduce its length and weight. The redesigned spoon led to a decrease in plastic packaging waste by 7 metric tonnes in 2014 (equivalent to 1 double-decker bus).
  • Switched from plastic take-out bags to recyclable paper bags in 2011.
  • Switched from plastic and foam cups to recyclable paper cups in 2012 and 2013.
  • Switched to strawless lids for all cold beverage paper cups in 2021.
Recycle & Reuse

Recycle & Reuse

Here at McDonald’s, we care deeply about the environment and believe that every individual big or small can play their part in ensuring a sustainable future.

Here’s how we’re currently recycling & reusing:

  • Collection of over 20,000kg of used oil per month to recycle into non-food products
  • Switching to recycled paper bags and recycled paper cups
  • Redirecting heat generated from the air-conditioning systems to dishwashing in our green restaurants.
Food waste

Food Waste

With our ‘Made For You’ production management system, we are able to successfully minimise food waste. For instance, buns are toasted only after an order is received. This enables us to forecast the quantity of food products that our kitchens need to prepare in relation to demand.

Our Sustainability Timeline

Our commitment towards the environment has always been a sustained and progressive effort. Here are some of the key highlights of our efforts over the years.
